Stolpman Vineyards So Fresh Crunchy Rôastie 2023

Stolpman Vineyards So Fresh Crunchy Rôastie 2023

The Land

The So Fresh Crunchy Rôastie originates from Stolpman Vineyards' Ballard Canyon estate, where the unique terroir plays a vital role. The vineyards benefit from a combination of active, youthful limestone and a thin layer of dense clay topsoil. This combination allows them to retain moisture while encouraging the roots to dig deep into the white rock. Constant winds from the Pacific Ocean, along with a dramatic drop in temperature at night, contribute to the long growing season and the concentration of flavors. A dedication to dry farming means that the grapes are never diluted and truly express their origins.

The Wine

This bottling offers a unique "Cherry - Sangre - Crunch Trifecta" with a juicy core of red fruit and the signature black tar and bloodiness. This version sees extended elevage (10 months) in used oak, which allows the primary fruit to become seamless and pure without losing freshness. Dried tobacco leaf leads the savory elements, showing an expression of the vintage rather than herbal notes from the past. The palate has a firm, crunchy cherry character that sparkles with energetic firmness. Made with a light touch via carbonic maceration with no skin contact, this wine is intended as a "Featherweight version" of Syrah, emphasizing purity and drinkability.

The People

Stolpman Vineyards is a family affair, with Pete and Jessica Stolpman at the helm. Pete took over the estate in 2009 and is focused on showing the best of his unique estate. Jessica runs California sales and is married to Pete. The family also works closely with vignerons Ruben and Maria Solorzano, both of whom are essential members of the team, with Ruben managing all aspects of the vineyard and Maria concentrating on day to day activities. Kyle Knapp and Matt Nocas are the winemakers, and share a philosophy of letting the unique character of the vineyard be expressed through minimal intervention in the winery. The Stolpman family has made a deep commitment to their terroir and their employees, resulting in a highly individual and expressive project that seeks to challenge the standard view of California winemaking.
