Mother Tongue Shiraz 2019

Mother Tongue Shiraz 2019

Land

The Mother Tongue Shiraz is sourced from Kraft Vineyard in Tanunda, one of Barossa Valley's historic sites, originally planted by Victor Kraft in the 1930s and 1940s. This 2.5-acre plot of shiraz bushvines lies on a diverse mix of loam, clay, and sandy soils. Known for its capability to produce robust red wines, the site benefits from Barossa's warm and dry climate which in 2018 brought about a vintage with elevated ripeness and softer acidity, albeit with slightly reduced yields.

Wine

This Shiraz is crafted with a focus on minimal intervention. The grapes, hand-picked and destemmed, undergo native yeast fermentation and a light pressing before aging in Taransaud French oak barrels, two-thirds of which are new, for at least 18 months. The wine is lightly fined and remains unfiltered to preserve its depth and natural character, featuring a rich palate of dried and liquored fruits, complemented by an undercurrent of herbal notes and a structured oak influence that adds complexity and elegance.

People

The driving force behind Mother Tongue is the visionary duo Dennis and Debra Scholl, notable for their diverse roles as entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and art collectors. Collaborating with winemaker Christian Canute, whom they knew from their previous venture, Betts & Scholl, the Scholls continue to influence the wine scene with their distinctive approach that marries traditional Barossa qualities with a modern sensibility. The wine's label, featuring artwork by Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, reflects their deep passion for Australian Aboriginal art, making each bottle a tribute to Australia’s rich cultural heritage.
