Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Rioja Reserva 2012
The Land
Viña Tondonia lies on the right bank of the River Ebro in Haro, within Rioja Alta, and is arguably the most renowned vineyard of Bodega López de Heredia. Established in 1913–14 and spanning over 100 hectares, it sits in an alluvial clay soil with a high limestone content, forming a natural bowl-like depression near Rioja Alavesa. The region benefits from both warm summers and Atlantic-influenced rainfall, which, in 2012, arrived late but proved crucial for vine health. Thanks to these conditions, the vines yielded concentrated berries while maintaining notable freshness. López de Heredia’s commitment to estate-grown fruit ensures that vineyard practices, from pruning to harvest, remain under strict control, fostering a consistent and characteristic quality in every vintage.
The Wine
The Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva 2012 is a traditional blend of Tempranillo (75%), Garnacho (15%), and small portions of Graciano and Mazuelo (10%). It exemplifies the winery’s time-honored approach to long aging: six years in seasoned American oak barrels, racked twice a year and fined with fresh egg whites, followed by additional bottle maturation without filtration. The result is a graceful, medium-bodied wine at 13% alcohol with 6.6 g/l of total acidity and a very dry profile. Aromas of jamón, leather, and cedar spice meld with red cherry compote and a fragrant touch of orange zest. On the palate, its bright acidity, gently integrated oak, and hints of dried berry form a poised, energetic profile. Decanting can help the wine open up more quickly; otherwise, it continues to evolve in the glass, revealing the full depth of its Rioja heritage.
The People
Founded in 1877 by Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, Bodega López de Heredia is now helmed by the family’s fourth generation, remaining steadfast in the principles that earned it the moniker of “Supreme Rioja.” All grapes come from the estate’s own vineyards, including Viña Tondonia, and the wines are produced in a style that emphasizes extended aging, natural fermentation, and minimal intervention. Their in-house cooperage, deep underground cellars, and strict adherence to tradition endow each bottle with a distinct identity. Through nearly a century and a half of perseverance and dedication, the López de Heredia family continues to embody the rich history and timeless character of Rioja.
