Lelarge-Pugeot Charmes de Vrigny Extra Brut 2010

Lelarge-Pugeot Charmes de Vrigny Extra Brut 2010

The Land

From the rolling terrain of Vrigny in the Montagne de Reims, Les Charmes de Vrigny reflects a terroir steeped in history and prestige. This wine originates from vineyards planted over four decades ago, where the roots delve deep into chalk, limestone, clay loam, and sand—classic Champagne soils that impart a vibrancy and finesse to the wine. The north-facing aspect of these slopes ensures a slow, measured ripening of fruit, preserving freshness and acidity. With the Lelarge-Pugeot family's steadfast commitment to biodynamic principles, the health of the land and its ecosystem shine through in every sip.

The Wine

A study in elegance and restraint, Les Charmes de Vrigny is a nuanced Extra Brut Champagne crafted from a harmonious blend of 50% Pinot Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir, and 20% Chardonnay. This cuvée balances the expressive fruitiness of Pinot Meunier, the depth of Pinot Noir, and the finesse of Chardonnay. Aged for an extraordinary 10 years on the lees after six months in tank, the wine achieves a stunning complexity. Aromas of under-ripe green apples, lemon zest, and soft brioche lead to a palate that is taut and refreshing, with a touch of citrus pith and subtle salinity. The fine mousse enhances its playful levity, while the restrained dosage (4 g/L) keeps the finish crisp and precise.

The People

Lelarge-Pugeot is a deeply rooted, eighth-generation family domaine, helmed by Dominique Lelarge and Dominique Pugeot, alongside their children. Their daughter Clémence, an ambassador for biodynamic farming, continues the family’s legacy with a forward-thinking yet tradition-bound ethos. Certified organic in 2014 and biodynamic in 2017, the family approaches wine growing with an emphasis on sustainability. Their wines are not merely expressions of Champagne but reflections of their collective spirit—bright, lively, and undeniably captivating. With experimental cuvées like La Côte des Glaises, the family dares to push the boundaries of what Champagne can be, crafting wines that transcend fizz to celebrate the essence of the land.
